Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918) was a leading Swiss painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who not only left an important imprint on contemporary European painting but also fascinated the Japanese audiences. 40 years after his first exhibition in Japan, Hodler’s works will be presented once again. As the author of the theory of painting known as parallelism, his works obtain a distinctive “rhythm” through the repetition and resonance of similar forms. His approach corresponded also to the Eurhythmics method of teaching music through dance of a Swiss contemporary, the musician Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. The exhibition will provide an opportunity rare anywhere in the world to review Hodler’s oeuvre in light of these themes.
