Sloping Land Management (SLM)

SDC has worked with the Ministry of Land and Environmental Protection since 2004 to empower farmer groups to apply new agroforestry practices on steeply sloped land. These entail participatory land use planning, reforestation and conservation farming. The concept is humanitarian in nature and designed to address the issue of food security amongst rural populations. This phase of the programme will focus on spreading these practices further and introducing methodologies which reduce the risks of disasters that threaten rural areas.

WASH Programme

The integrated and holistic approach that this programme takes to water is designed to address sanitational and health issues, and establish linkages between wastewater and agriculture. In this, the project keeps a focus on the basic humanitarian need of access to WASH services through capacity building and construction of infrastructure. Most of the activities will be implemented in the provinces of Kangwon, North and South Hangwhae in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Through the usage of food aid in the form of Swiss dairy products, Swiss Humanitarian Aid contributes to the prevention and treatment of malnutrition, undernourishment, and disease. The SDC’s Humanitarian Aid administers the credit granted by parliament for a yearly amount of some CHF 20 million destined for the purchase of Swiss dairy products and their use for the benefit of the needy. Its task is to ensure a sustainable, targeted, and closely monitored food aid.

UNICEF - WASH Capacity Building Programme

The objective of the cooperation between SDC and UNICEF is to strengthen the capacity of Ministry of City Management (MoCM) in planning and implementing rural water supply and sanitation programmes in an equitable and sustainable manner. This will be achieved by strengthening their technical capacity in the areas of water sector assessment, use of alternate technologies and improving their capacity in water and sanitation system design and construction supervision.

Sloping Land Management

Starting in 2004, the Ministry of Land and Environmental Protection (MoLEP) in partnership with SDC introduced to Sloping Land User Groups (SLUGs) new Sloping Land Management approaches and practices (SLM), such as participatory land use planning, reforestation, conservation farming and environmental measurements with the aim to improve the livelihoods of the rural population.
