The PCF’s overall goal is for all children and youth to have access to quality education. Its work in promoting access to quality education is framed within internationally recognized standards, such as education for sustainable development (ESD), intercultural education (ICE) including multi-lingual education and participation of children, as well as gender. PCF engages with teachers, parents, communities, school management and responsible authorities of the education system in view of improving the quality of learning.

Contribution to Confidence Building Measures Program in Transnistria – Promoting Confidence in the Health Sector

Population living in Transnistria has limited access to quality maternal and child health care. The vaccination coverage rate is declining and the number of premature and underweight newborns is increasing. The project aims to approximate maternal and child health care in Transnistria to international standards, as well as to improve the access to and quality of maternal and child health services at secondary and primary level. A special focus is put on nutrition and immunization. The project offers good opportunities for building trust across borders through common trainings of professionals and concerted efforts on immunization.

Moldova's health sector reform agenda is ambitious and needs strong steering by the Ministry of Health and adequate capacities of key national health institutions. This project supports the production and use of evidence, the revision of policy documents and institutional capacity building, thus contributing to setting a favourable environment for health reforms and strong synergies with the policy components of all SDC health projects.

Water and Sanitation in Moldova

In Moldova, a majority of people living in rural areas lack access to safe drinking water and sanitation. To improve this situation, the project will establish decentralised water supply Systems and environmental sanitation facilities. The experience is then anchored in sector institutions by fostering their capacity, streamlining internal procedures, and handing over the lead in the implementation. In total, 60'000 people will have access to sustainable an improved water and 26'000 people to ecological toilets.

Reducing the Burden of Non-Communicable Diseases in Moldova

In Moldova, a quarter of the population dies of a Non-Communicable Disease (NCD), such as cardio-vascular disease, before reaching the age of 70. The quality of life of people affected by NCDs is very low, as the health system lacks the capacities to tackle NCDs effectively. The project strengthens primary healthcare service providers’ capacities to better organize care together with social services. Better health will be promoted through engaging communities and local authorities in common actions for NCD prevention and promotion of healthy behaviors.

The SRC’s overall goal is to contribute to healthy and safe living for vulnerable groups and communities. Since access to quality health care services remains a key factor for good health, the SRC promotes both supply and demand side of local health systems. As healthy living also depends on the environment, SRC focuses on health determinants such as water, sanitation, nutrition and health literacy. Adressing risks and disasters, SRC programmes encompass disaster risk reduction measures and foster community resilience.

Youth Friendly Health Services in Moldova

In Moldova, young people face various health challenges which are currently not adequately addressed by health services. To improve this situation, Youth Friendly Health Services started as pilots in 2005 and are being scaled-up by the Ministry of Health since 2011, with the support of SDC. The project is focused on improving the quality and enhancing the comprehensiveness of the services, as well as on the community support for young people to adopt a healthier lifestyle and seek assistance from health services.
