Local news, 19.10.2021

The Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Environment and Tourism, and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation jointly launched training for school psychologists for the first time as part of the Education for Sustainable Development II Project.

Switzerland is convinced, that the skills and abilities to develop as individuals, and to understand and manage emotional well-being are essential to learn for every student, and therefore should be part of general education. That is why school psychologists have developed a training program focused on assisting and cooperating with students, teachers, parents, and guardians. The training material is not only focused on psychological analysis at the theoretical level, but also greatly concentrates on how to formulate and deliver messages and information about the complicated and difficult issues students encounter in real life.

Starting in June of this year, 12 credit hour training sessions on school psychology were organized by the Mongolian Institute of Educational Research, the Information and Training Center for Nature and Environment, Institute of Teachers’ Professional Development, and the Mongolian Psychologists Association The sessions included 21 days of online training, 14 days in the classroom, and 14 days of practical training. The training sessions were led by professional trainers from the Mongolian Psychologists Association, scientists and researchers in the sector, and professors.

Researchers have revealed findings and conclusions from studies looking at the psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on students, in terms of loneliness, depression, and fears about the degradation of their learning achievements after nearly two years of distance learning. A total of 72 psychologists working in 30 schools that are part of the Education for Sustainable Development II” Project in six aimag and two districts in Ulaanbaatar, as well as other laboratory and international schools, will be trained to specialize as school psychologists. Twenty-three psychologists working in project schools have already completed their training programs and received professional certificates.

The work of trained school psychologists in schools is expected to contribute to improving the quality of education and management by supporting the well-being of students in the school environment, and by providing early exposure to emotional and physiological development. School  psychologists will also provide professional assistance to students to resolve the difficult and complicated issues that occur at home and at school by providing consultation to teachers, parents, and guardians. These professionals will focus on assisting students with overcoming the sensitive and complicated years of adolescence, on helping them to avoid developing bad habits. In other words, school psychologists will be strong supporters of the students they work with.
