The “Society, culture and memory” programme promotes culture and historical memory in Central America to stimulate processes leading towards more inclusive, less violent societies. Both culture and historical memory have enormous potential to help to create identities and transform societies in the Central American region, which has been characterized by inconclusive peace and democratization processes and the highest rates of violence in the world. With its long presence in the region and its impartial reputation, Switzerland is well positioned to enhance these processes


Strengthening the Systems that Combat Corruption and Impunity (MACCIH-CICIG) in Central America

Honduras and Guatemala requested the Organization of American States and the United Nations to create mechanisms to combat corruption and impunity. The Support Mission Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras and the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala are supported by international cooperation in improving the justice system, the public prosecutor, and the anti-corruption and Human Rights protection agencies. COSUDE contributes to existing mandates and strengthens regional interchange.

VINCULAR – Encadenamientos productivos

Economic growth, foreign direct investment and exports are continuously increasing in Nicaragua, however with little benefit for the local economy. This project, implemented by PRONICARAGUA, promotes business linkages in the agricultural sector between smallholder farmers, service providers and bigger firms, thereby improving competitiveness, access to markets, as well as the livelihood and incomes of 20’000 persons in the rural areas of the country.

Toda la régión está experimentando vulnerabilidad las que pueden causar catástrofes cuya magnitud limitada en la myoría de los casos, no justifica la activacíon de una respuesta internacional, perso todavía puede causar cictimas y daños considerables. En la misma manera los fenómenos geoffisicos como terremotos, tsunamis, erupciones volcánicas, etc., afectan la región.

A través de pegueñas contribuciones Suiza se manifiesta como un socio de confianza para el fortalecimiento de su red y al mismo tiempo aumentar su visibilidad. 


Local Governance Program Nicaragua-APIM

01.01.2016 - 31.12.2020

The final phase aims to capitalize and to transfer best practices of public investment cycle into national norms. The program will smoothly phase out the earmarked budget support to 15 municipalities in order to i) strengthen capacities to manage municipal investments plans for rural feeder roads and basic services; and ii) ensure sustainability, inclusive governance and transparency. Best practices and experiences will be documented and disseminated.


Innovation and dissemination of technologies for adaptation of agriculture to climate change – AGRIADAPTA

10'000 families in 19 municipalities of the country improve their food security and their situation of poverty by practising sustainable and climate-smart agriculture. The Project will provide resources so that small-hold farmers in environmentally degraded dry areas affected by climate change and variability develop capacities, exchange knowledge and apply technologies for climate change adaptation.


Territorial Economic Development Programme – PRODET

While the Las Segovias region has been marked by high levels of poverty, it is also characterised by its potential for economic development, albeit with only limited manufacturing activities. The programme will promote territorial economic development in ten municipalities and will contribute to benefit over 5000 microenterprises – owned mainly by women – and members of cooperatives from an increase in income by adding value to their products and through better sales due to improved access to markets.


Catastrophic Microinsurance in Central America

Central America is a natural disasters prone region where large vulnerable populations suffer over-proportionately from increasing frequency and impact of climate change events, as traditional disaster coping mechanisms are eroding with growing environmental pressures and rising urbanisation. The public-private development partnership with Swiss Re, FOMIN, and KfW’s Climate Adaptation Fund supports MiCRO in strengthening the disaster resilience of at least 80’000 vulnerable households by 30.9.2016.


Local Governance Program Nicaragua (PGL-APIM Nic)

01.01.2013 - 30.06.2018

In Nicaragua, municipalities are the main driver of local development. However, many rural municipalities have weak human and financial capacities to assume their mandates. The program aims at improving living conditions of the population by strengthening municipal capacities, providing access to basic services and enhancing municipal investment opportunities. Citizen participation and transparency are essential principles of the program.
