Hintergrund

Innovation is one of the main drivers of long-term sustainable growth in any economy and the only unlimited source of prosperity. Countries all around the world depend on entrepreneurs to develop ideas and turn them into new products and services. Eventually, their businesses create new jobs that are better paid and offer more opportunities to employees. However, entrepreneurs depend on favourable local conditions in order to be successful, commonly referred to as the "entrepreneurial ecosystem" (EE). The EEs in many emerging markets are in early stages and need help to develop into effective support environments.

Ziele

The development objective of the Swiss Entrepreneurship Program I and II is to create jobs, facilitate tailored access to finance for entrepreneurs and to improve support mechanisms throughout the business growth cycle by strengthening (selected) local EEs in Peru, Vietnam, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Kosovo.

Mittelfristige Wirkungen

Startups enjoy easy access to high quality support services from professional organizations, allowing them to grow.

The local EEs provide a condusive environment for growth-oriented businesses to succeed. Furthermore, they have the potential to produce positive growth effects due to strong economic interlinkages ("economic clusters").

Entrepreneurs have access to tailored financing throughout the entire business growth cycle.

Mutually benefiting links with the Swiss EEs are established.

Resultate von früheren Phasen:

Phase I: From July 2015 to June 2019, the Swiss Entrepreneurship Program contributed to the creation of 3'562 new jobs (or even more), not including likely follow-on job effects. 2’537 entrepreneurs benefitted from tailored support and were able to raise CHF 39.8 mio. of capital, 66 organizations in the ecosystems supported, 81 diaspora members enganged, 823 investors trained, 1406 mentors trained. With regard to the qualitative dimension, the program nurtured trustful relationships and incentivized the sort of collaboration that is key for successful and continuoulsy maturing EEs. Today, more and more startups show sustainable growth and receive private investments. However, as anticipated from the outset and confirmed by the mid-term evaluation in 2018 and the Final Report of Phase I (by Aug 2019), EE development is a long-term process that requires time and tenacity. In order to consolidate and sustain the results, SECO decided to extend its support for a second phase of four years.
