The Swiss Embassy in the Philippines celebrates the Swiss National Day!

Press releases, 02.08.2016

August 1st is to the Swiss what June 12 Independence Day is to the Filipinos. It marks our National Day, commemorating the moment back in 1291 when the Swiss Confederation was founded. 725 years of existence gives us a good reason for wanting to celebrate with our Filipino partners and the international community.

This year, during the official Reception of the Swiss National Day we will present a solo photographic exhibit of endemic birds of the Philippines, captured by Lorenzo Barelli, Third Secretary at the Swiss Embassy in Manila and keen photographer. These endemic Philippine avian treasures remind us all of how rich the Philippines fauna is and how imperative it is to ensure the survival of those bird species.

230: the number of bird species that can be found nowhere else in the planet, making the Philippines the 3rd country in the world with the most number of endemic birds.

90: the number of endemic bird species in the country that are already gravely threatened due to loss of habitat, deforestation, mining, illegal hunting, poaching and climate change

To promote the efforts of preservation of endangered bird species in the Philippines, the Embassy of Switzerland will donate the exhibition to the Biodiversity Management Bureau of the DENR.
