The project IFC Private Sector Engagement Kakuma implemented by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), seeks to attract private sector solutions for refugees and host communities through catalyzing private investments. Thanks to access to improved services, potentially lower prices and supported jobs, refugees and host community will enhance economic opportunities and capacities, self-esteem, dignity and empowerment.

The Somali population has remained chronically food insecure over the years with acute emergency needs during the cyclic drought periods. Switzerland contributes, through its support to enhanced fodder production and income, to the longer-term resilience building of the Somali communities. By supporting the provision of information and data for decision making, the formulation of evidence-based policy making and the use of the data for increased protection and resilience will enhanced.
Building Regional and National capacities for improved Migration Governance in the IGAD Region

The Horn of Africa is of high interest for Switzerland in terms of migration policy. Swiss support to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and its Member States will contribute to improve their capacities to manage migration. Migrants and refugees will be better protected in the region and the contribution of migration to development of the Horn of Africa will be supported, hence stability promoted. The Swiss expertise and engagement at the policy level will contribute to foster a dialogue on migration between Switzerland and the Horn of Africa.
Somalia - Support to the Durable Solutions Initiative (DSI)

In Somalia, more than 2.6 mio people are internally displaced. Switzerland contributes to the provision of durable solutions for these people in the region by enhancing the awareness and the capacity of all relevant humanitarian, development and state-building actors under the leadership of the Somali Government. By addressing the underlying causes of protracted displacement, the affected people are offered the perspective of integration and self-reliance rather than migration.

After two decades of civil war and the following establishment of an internationally recognised federal government of Somalia in 2012, the UN Joint Programme for Local Governance and Decentralised Service Delivery (JPLG) supports the building up of more effective, accountable and inclusive local governance systems. Focusing on improved regulatory frameworks, enhanced public service delivery, and civic engagement, SDC contributes to enhanced state legitimacy, peacebuilding and more equitable access to public service well-being for all citizens, aiming thereby at more stability in the Horn of Africa.

Somalia - Inclusive and accountable governance

In 2012, a comprehensive state-building process along federalist principles started in Somalia. Switzerland will contribute to a more inclusive, accountable and equitable governance system by focusing on the constitutional review process and strengthening the parliamentarians’ capacities. It will promote knowledge sharing, exchange of Somali, Swiss and international expertise, and public discourse to foster Somali-owned governance arrangement.

This intervention contributes to improve access of the Somali population to quality, affordable and equitable health services in South Central Somalia and Puntland. In a context of still very low health services coverage, high level of vulnerabilities and protracted conflict, this intervention will ensure the delivery of essential primarily health care services, focusing on women and children, while at the same time contributing to progressively build the health system at both district and regional levels.

The Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) is a pooled-fund managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). With this contribution, Switzerland will ensure that the most vulnerable women, men and children affected by the severe drought prevailing in Somalia and living in high level food insecurity situations receive timely, targeted and life-saving assistance.
