This project was put into implementation in response to critical needs of access to clean drinking water in Khorog and request of the government of GBAO. The intervention will focus on addressing the acute shortage of drinking water supply in the central part of Khorog town, by extending and connecting the water pipeline from the source to the city mains. The project is funded by Government of Switzerland and implemented by AKAH and AKF in the course of six months.
The project is aiming to increase access to quality water services and improving knowledge on hygiene, sustainable use, management and maintenance of water services in Khorog. The uniqueness of the project is that it has two-sided benefit for the beneficiaries by addressing the synergy between the long-term socio-economic development and issues of disaster risk reduction. The new pipeline will be extended along the slope on the artificially made terrace for more than five hundred meters. The six-meter built terrace on the slope for the pipeline will also serve to mitigate and prevent the residential areas and protect more than 44 households and local and public infrastructure from the risk of rock fall from the upper mountainside.
The 150 mm diameter pipeline will be installed between the existing water source at Boghevdara and the central part of Khorog, thus providing access to clean drinking water to more than 1,062 households which is equivalent to 5, 597 people in three neighborhoods of Khorog. Over and above, dozens of government and commercial buildings, NGOs, health facilities, schools and early childhood development centers located in the target area will also benefit from the project.
Yodgor Faizov highlighted the importance of rational use and sustainable management of water recourses in the region and noted that, without a solid management system, we would not be able to provide full access to water supply services for the population, even if the entire water of the river is piped out. One of the solutions to the aforementioned challenge is to install water meters at households level and in every building, which enables to adequately use drinking water and manage the recourse as required, thereby avoid the clean water wasted. This approach will ensure the appropriate use and year round access to clean drinking water and sustainable use and management of water services in the region, which is expected to be applied in the coming years.
