Mr Cassis will attend the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on 19 September at the invitation of Buckingham Palace. Heads of state and government from around the world will pay their last respects to the late Queen in London's Westminster Abbey. During the course of the day, Mr Cassis will also meet with King Charles III. He will then travel on to New York for the high-level opening week of the UN General Assembly.
A strong UN is more necessary than ever
The 77th session of the General Assembly opened on 13 September and will continue for one year. It is taking place at a time of multiple crises: the heads of the UN's member states will be gathering during the high-level opening week from 19 to 23 September under the shadow of wars, the pandemic, a food crisis and energy shortages.
With his participation, Mr Cassis will highlight the need for the UN to continue to operate effectively in these challenging times. As a platform for dialogue, the UN is more necessary than ever to ensure peaceful coexistence, security and prosperity around the world. Switzerland is committed to effective and focused multilateralism that concentrates its energies on the most urgent challenges facing humanity. Switzerland is pursuing this goal without losing sight of the broad spectrum of issues on the UN agenda.
Mr Cassis will address the UN General Assembly on 20 September. He will also attend a series of events and meet with government representatives.
