First Allocation (Cash) of SDC Funding (Europe and Mediterranean Region Division) to WFP Operations in 2013

Project completed

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding for responding to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to WFP operations allows the World Food Programme (WFP) to respond proactively and to provide immediate food assistance in life-threatening situations and underfunded emergencies.

Background

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger and under-nutrition. Every year, WFP provides food assistance to more than 100 million people, mostly women and children. WFP is Switzerland’s largest United Nations humanitarian aid multilateral partner.

Objectives

Providing immediate food assistance in life-threatening situations and underfunded emergencies.

Target groups

2.5 million affected people in Syria, including IDPs; over 635’000 refugees from Syria in the neighbouring countries Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey; 454’500 food insecure and geographically marginalized women, men and children (non refugees) living in the West Bank (oPt) and affected by acute poverty.

Medium-term outcomes

WFP provides emergency food assistance in the affected countries and supports food assistance programmes that bridge the gap between relief and recovery, helping communities build a better future.

Results

Results from previous phases:

  • Syria: SDC’s 2012 multi-bi support to WFP’s operations in Syria with CHF 1 million contributed to reaching close to 1.5 million affected people monthly with food.
  • Regional refugee response to Syria crisis: SDC’s 2012 multi-bi support with CHF 190’000 to WFP’s food assistance for Syrian refugees contributed to cover the refugees’ needs in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.
  • oPt: since 2002 WFP has helped the Palestinian Authority to maintain food security and protect the assets of the vulnerable non-refugee communities; improved beneficiaries’ dietary diversity and support to the local economy with the urban voucher pilot activities launched in 2009.
