African Forests, People and Climate Change


The African forestry sector holds considerable potential for mitigating and facilitating adaptation to adverse impacts of climate change that severely threaten the development of Sub-Saharan Africa. Support to the African Forest Forum ensures that policies and action base on the improved understanding about the relationship between climate change, forests and trees and that these elements will be reflected in their revised nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the climate convention.

Hintergrund The economies, social and ecological systems in Sub-Saharan Africa are increasingly impacted by climate change. African governments have responded to this in various ways – such as the important commitments to contain adverse effects of climate change included in their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs); and their increasing engagement in regional and global efforts to combat climate change. For delivery, it is now crucial to facilitate policy uptake and application of the improved understanding about the relationship between forests, trees and climate for Africa’s future development; a thematic field spearheaded by AFF over the past years.
Ziele To build capacities and skills of stakeholders to address adverse effects of climate change and take up opportunities that come with climate change through better management and use of Africa's forests and tree resources in various landscapes in ways that will enhance livelihoods, national economies, sustain biodiversity, improve the quality of the environment and contribute to the global efforts to contain climate change (unchanged from previous phases). 
Zielgruppen Immediate beneficiaries are African Forest Forum members who receive targeted information from AFF. They include, but are not limited to, policy makers, forest managers, academia, research, and the public. SDC’s contribution thereby specifically targets African policy makers in the climate and environmental domains.
Mittelfristige Wirkungen
  1. To strengthen capacity of African forestry stakeholders in adopting best practices that integrates both adaptation and mitigation options in response to the impacts of climate change and variability to biophysical and social systems in different landscapes
  2. To enhance national forest governance by strengthening the capacity of African stakeholders to implement Paris Agreement commitments and related global climate change policies and initiatives related to forestry
  3. To promote entrepreneurship opportuni-ties and technologically efficient means for value addition in African forestry, including those related to climate change that enhance livelihoods, national incomes and employment
  4. To strengthen AFF’s institutional capacity in creation and targeted sharing of relevant forest and tree-based knowledge and information for improved policy decision making.

Resultate

Erwartete Resultate:  

  1. Improved uptake of integrated forest and tree-based adaptation and mitigation options in addressing climate change and climate variability among African forestry policy makers
  2. Knowledge and skills developed among relevant African stakeholders on mainstreaming and coordinating, in their national forestry sector, relevant global and regional climate change policies and initiatives
  3. National forestry sector adaptation and mitigation activities clearly defined in NDCs
  4. African countries capacity to develop their second NDC in 2020 enhanced
  5. Knowledge products in forestry, climate change and other emerging environmental issues produced and shared in timely manner to relevant policy stakeholders


Resultate von früheren Phasen:  

  1. Considerably improved knowledge acquired by AFF on the status of forestry in various regional plans and policies, and of views on the forests-climate change nexus across the continent; good relationship and functioning partnerships with key African institutions and organisations
  2. Improved African stakeholders’ capacity to address climate change issues in African forestry (from academia, through research to national governments and civil society); thanks to trainings conducted and elaboration/ dissemination of targeted knowledge products
  3. Enhanced articulation of an “African voice” on environmental issues in international fora; thanks to engagement with relevant stakeholders including the African Union Commission, the regional economic communities and national governments; and specifically by  building the capacities for international negotiations of both individuals and organizations
  4. Considerable outreach of AFF products, in particular. through its website
  5. Enhanced institutional structure and capacity of AFF in terms of strengthened organizational stability, good regional and international profile as credible and reliable source of African forestry information, considerable convening power and increasing trust by national governments, and regional and global institutions

Koordination mit anderen Projekten und Akteuren Programmatic exchange and collaboration with selected regional and multilateral thematic institutions (guided by AFF’s programmatic approach). Swiss bilateral cooperation programmes will receive special attention - in particular the sustainable charcoal programme in Tanzania. Swedish Sida and SDC continue to closely coordinate their respective support to the overarching AFF programmatic approach and their provision of financial means for institutional development.
