Education creates prospects for refugees and migrants

The international community wants to promote high-quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for everyone – including refugees and migrants. However, not everyone has access to educational provision. This situation is revealed by the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report 2019 which will be presented in Bern on 21 February. Swiss development cooperation attaches great importance to this issue.

Switzerland provides additional 10 million francs for Rohingya refugees

In 2019, Switzerland will provide CHF 10 million and deploy experts from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) to help tackle the Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh. The humanitarian crisis in eastern Bangladesh, a region that has taken in large numbers refugees, remains acute. The international Joint Response Plan seeks to raise USD 920 million to meet basic needs.

Tech4Good: effective engagement by Switzerland through partnerships with the private sector and academia

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is working with the public sector and academia to develop innovative approaches and make projects more effective. International Geneva provides a platform for discussing and establishing rules and standards for new technologies. The FDFA hosted 'Tech4Good' and 'Geneva Day' events at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where the results of this cooperation were presented and further potential discussed.

'Together we're better': SDC and SECO sponsor initiatives run by committed young people

Working with young men and women on overcoming global challenges: the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) have launched the 'Together we're better' competition, sponsoring initiatives run by young people. The SDC and SECO are looking for innovative projects run by young people in the 16–35 age group which aim to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged communities in developing countries. Prizes will be awarded to the winning projects at the 2019 Annual Development Cooperation Conference to be held in Fribourg on 21 June 2019.

Switzerland and Zambia sign aviation agreement following first visit by a Swiss minister to Lusaka

Federal councillor Ignazio Cassis signed an air services agreement on Tuesday in Lusaka with Acting Minister of Transport and Communications Kafwaya Mutotwe. This agreement strengthens ties between the two countries and is one of a range of measures with the potential to strengthen economic relations. During this first visit by a federal councillor to Zambia, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) also met with President Edgar Lungu.

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will visit Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa next week during his first trip to Africa. The main goals of the trip are to strengthen economic and political relations with these three southern African countries, including by signing an agreement on air transport with Zambia, and to visit projects supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), particularly in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

With its exhibition 'Next Stop Nirvana – Approaches to Buddhism', the Rietberg Museum invites its visitors to explore Buddhism and Buddhist culture. The exhibition's centrepiece is a monumental stone sculpture of the Buddha from Pakistan which, thanks to the work of the SDC, can be seen abroad for the first time ever.
