Plantwise plus (PW+)
The project Plantwise Plus aims to help farmers face climate challenges and plant health threats. Through the provision of information on climate adaptation practices and technologies (agroecological practices), decision-making tools, and targeted climate risk analyses, the project will help countries to prepare themselves for and prevent plant health threats and reducing crop losses. In the past, CABI and Switzerland have made a proven difference to livelihoods and food security of 40 million farmers worldwide.

Background | Smallholder farmers in developing countries are the most vulnerable and disproportionately affected by threats posed by climate change and pests. Smallholders need to adapt farming practices to climate hazards. But access to reliable information is limited for them. Climate change is also affecting the biology, distribution and outbreak potential of pests, and invasive species. Yet there is no consistent mechanism for surveillance, rapid detection and response or providing the technical support needed to confirm causes and deliver effective solutions. The new CABI-led global programme Plantwise Plus (PW+) will help countries to predict, prepare themselves for and prevent plant health threats and support farmers to grow the quantity of food required and also to improve the quality of food grown, in a changing climate. |
Objectives | To build up the resilience of smallholder farmers so that they can confidently face the challenges of climate change and plant health threats through the promotion of climate-smart approaches to crop production, sustainably increasing incomes and the supply of safer and more nutritious food. |
Target groups |
Over a 10 year period, this initiative aims to make 50 million women and men farmers in 20 countries more resilient to climate change impacts During this first phase the concept and the approach will be tested and deployed in 6 to 7 countries. Key public sector organisations at national and sub-national level will include agricultural extension, national plant protection organisations, input regulators, national agricultural research organisations (NARS) and universities and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Private sector partners in target countries, agro-input suppliers and distributors, traders in the selected sectors. Plantwise Plus will also work with consumer organisations. |
Medium-term outcomes |
- Knowledgeable and professional agricultural service providers (including agro-input dealers) increasing uptake and promotion of climate-smart plant health practices and inputs. - Increased supply of and demand for safer, higher quality and locally produced food in domestic markets. - Improved management of plant production risks through targeted and cost-effective national pest prioritisation, monitoring and management systems, using new digital technologies and processes. - Enhanced availability, accessibility and affordability of low-risk plant protection products |
Results |
Expected results: Information and Communication Technology-based knowledge products, digital learning based on new and emerging challenges identified through plant health threat assessments. Voluntary standards for integrated crop management and good agricultural practice. New digital technologies and data driven processes to prepare countries to detect and respond to pest threats resulting from climate change and/or trade. low-risk plant protection products, as alternatives to highly-toxic pesticides driven through community-based organisations or existing manufacturers that will establish local affiliated companies Results from previous phases: This global programme will build on the foundation provided by Plantwise, Action on Invasives and other related programmes. The Plantwise reach of 44.1 million farmers (cumulative) by the end of 2019 has been possible due to improved efficiency in the delivery of actionable information on plant health to farmers through 175 partnerships with public, private as well as civil society organizations in more than 30 countries. Plant clinic networks continue to grow: currently, over 4,500 (cumulative) plant clinics have been established, of which 3,000 were active by the end of 2019. Concurrently, the number of plant doctors has also grown, with almost 11,500 extension officers now trained to run plant clinics effectively, with 95% of the trainings in 2019 being conducted by national trainers in all countries where Plantwise is active. |
