Middle East: the FDFA withdraws financial support for the Geneva Initiative

Switzerland has been supporting the Geneva Initiative (GI) since it was launched in 2003. Due to the conclusions of an external evaluation and following the regular review of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs’ programmatic engagements, the FDFA has now decided to gradually withdraw its funding for the GI, which it supports through two local NGOs. Within the framework of its Cooperation Programme 2021–24, Switzerland remains fully committed to promoting peace in the Middle East and supports the vision formulated by the UN Security Council of a region where two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace and within secure and recognised borders. This position, which was reaffirmed by the Federal Council in October 2020, is laid down in the MENA Strategy 2021–24.


SDC and Swiss National Science Foundation launch development programme for transdisciplinary research, innovation and sustainability

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) are jointly launching a new applied research programme focused on the fight against poverty and on sustainable development. The programme, undertaken in partnership with organisations directly involved in development, is aimed at researchers from Switzerland and the Global South. The SDC will contribute approximately CHF 19 million to the programme, set to run from 2022 to 2026. Research and innovation are key to achieving the objectives of the International Cooperation Strategy 2021–24.


Swiss Rescue again deemed fit for lifesaving deployments

Swiss Rescue has retained its spot among the world's best search and rescue teams. Around 80 members of Swiss Rescue and 8 search and rescue dogs were assessed and reclassified by an international evaluation panel between 22 and 24 November 2021 in the Geneva area.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis visits Slovenia, Saudi Arabia and Libya

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will visit Ljubljana, Riyadh and Tripoli from 18 to 21 November 2021. The trip to Slovenia, which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, will provide an opportunity to exchange views on European policy. In Saudi Arabia, the protecting power mandate between Iran and Saudi Arabia will be at the heart of discussions, alongside other issues such as the promotion of dialogue, scientific cooperation, sustainable development, and economic matters including the integration of women in the Saudi labour market. In Libya the focus will be on assessing the current conditions with a view to restoring peace in the country.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis in Paris for Libya Conference

On 12 November 2021, the city of Paris hosted the most recent international conference on Libya, attended by members of the Berlin Process Political Working Group as well as representatives from Libya's neighbouring countries and interim government. The conference, which is co-chaired by France, Germany, Italy and the UN, supports the political transition in Libya. In his speech, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis called for free and fair elections. Switzerland contributes to resolving the conflict in Libya through its peace building efforts and role as host state for the negotiations.


Switzerland reaffirms its support for the United Nations resident coordinator system

Patricia Danzi, Director General of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) of the FDFA, met with Robert Piper, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Development Coordination, in Bern on 8 November 2021. She renewed Switzerland's support for the resident coordinator system, which aims to increase the effectiveness of global development.



Ignazio Cassis receives Yemeni foreign minister in Geneva

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Yemen, Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, in Geneva on 13 September. The official meeting focused on the humanitarian situation in Yemen, ceasefire prospects and the resumption of the political process. Under its MENA Strategy 2021–24 and the Cooperation Strategy for Yemen 2017–21, Switzerland is working for the protection of the civilian population in Yemen and supporting the UN peace efforts.


Afghanistan: Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis attends ministerial meeting in Geneva

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the FDFA, took part in a UN conference on Afghanistan in Geneva today. The international community convened to discuss the situation in Afghanistan and respond to the country's grave humanitarian needs. In view of the emergency situation, Switzerland plans to allocate an additional CHF 33 million in humanitarian aid. Mr Cassis held bilateral talks on the margins of the conference with various officials, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres.


Earthquake in Haiti: Switzerland ends its emergency aid and takes part in reconstruction activities

The Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit's (SHA) emergency operations following the earthquake that hit Haiti on 14 August have ended. The activities on the ground helped restore access to drinking water, deliver relief goods and assess the structural soundness of buildings to avoid any risk of collapse in various towns. This aid reached over 20,000 people. The Swiss cooperation office, which has long been active in the country, is taking over and will continue its support projects on a long-term basis.


Largest Swiss aid transport under way for conflict zone in eastern Ukraine

Switzerland is currently carrying out its largest ever aid operation to eastern Ukraine. Yesterday, a first convoy of a total of 144 lorries carrying Swiss relief supplies crossed the line of contact bound for Donetsk, accompanied by six members of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA). Swiss Humanitarian Aid is providing local communities in need in the conflict zone with water treatment chemicals, hospital equipment and medical material to combat the pandemic. In total, the aid delivered amounts to around CHF 12 million.


60 years of serving local populations: The SDC is ever more evolving and adapting

The Technical Assistance Service, the predecessor of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), was established in 1961. Despite many challenges over the past 60 years, the SDC has made a significant contribution to sustainable development across a broad range of areas. To mark the anniversary, the SDC will organise a live event, with the participation of Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, which will present an overview of Switzerland's international cooperation activities.
