Eastern and Southern Africa

The Eastern and Southern Africa Section runs cooperation programmes in Mozambique, Tanzania, the Great Lakes region and Southern Africa.

The Eastern and Southern Africa Section runs cooperation programmes in Mozambique, Tanzania and the Great Lakes region (Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo) and regional cooperation programmes in Southern Africa (Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Lesotho and Eswatini). It also carries out humanitarian activities throughout the region, particularly in Madagascar. The section takes an integrated approach combining development cooperation and humanitarian aid (the humanitarian-development nexus).

It works in the areas of health, rural development, private sector development, employment, food security and governance. Climate change is also considered in the section's activities, including mitigation and adaptation measures to climate change.

The section coordinates its programmes with the FDFA State Secretariat, the Peace and Human Rights Division (for peacebuilding activities), as well as the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
