Support to WASH Road Map 2025

Too often, WASH responses has failed to meet defined humanitarian or sectoral standards owing to a lack of capacity, preparedness and funding. Through strengthened collective commitments and strategic engagement by all stakeholders active in the WASH sector, the implementation of the Road Map will roll out innovative approaches to save lives, reach better public and environmental health outcomes and build synergies between acute and complex emergencies, humanitarian crises and long-term development.

Background 34 organisations identified in 2017 key priorities to accelerate action and enhance the capacity of the WASH sector to provide high-quality and accountable responses rooted in preparedness and resilience of local communities, services and institutions across the continuum/contiguum of the humanitarian-development nexus. In 2019, these WASH actors committed collectively to implement the 2020 2025 WASH Road Map (RM), a set of tangibles 16 initiatives organised in four working groups.
Objectives With this funding, SDC will support the WASH Road Map’s overall goal to participate in the acceleration of actions to enhance the capacity of the WASH sector, in order to systematically provide high-quality and accountable WASH responses rooted in preparedness and resilience to ultimately assist affected populations.
Target groups The WASH Road Map intends to fill-in identified gaps in the Humanitarian WASH sector and develop the capacities needed to offer high-quality services. Direct target groups thus include all present and future actors that are active in the WASH, humanitarian, development and peace fields who intend to facilitate the lives of humanitarian and development beneficiaries, the indirect target groups of the WASH Road Map.
Medium-term outcomes

1)    The WASH Roadmap is a living and active collective thanks to a secretariat that monitors initiatives, supports its governance, encourages synergies and mobilizes the sector.

3)    All WASH Road Map initiatives which were delayed have been successfully dynamized by SDC funding and get a sufficient funding level.

3)    WASH Humanitarian sector outreach is strengthened through better structures, efficient advocacy and additional funds by new donors.

Results

Expected results:   Each of the overall 16 Road Map initiative is expected to deliver outputs. As the identification of initiatives to be supported by SDC is not yet finalized - the distribution of funds will be determined by the RM Executive Committee -  the SDC grant should help to reach the 16 initiatives’ outputs, either through direct funding or by funding the WASH Road Map Secretariat.

Results from previous phases:   SDC has been elected as co-chair of the WASH Road Map from March 2021 to March 2023. Governance structures, communication channels and a secretariat have been established. General progress of intiatives is good and the collective project enters in a second final phase towards full maturity of most of the projects.
