Migration Dynamics in Secondary Cities
Most migrants nowadays live in cities, and their socio-economic inclusion and protection are central for sustainable development. The programme supports cities to plan for and create inclusive, prosperous, and resilient communities. It gives city actors a voice in regional and global debates on migration, and is powered by the continued, strategic collaboration with the Mayors Migration Council and Cities Alliance, linked with longstanding Swiss expertise and rooted in SDC's priorities.

| Contexto |
With more than half of the world's population living in urgan areas, cities have become the primary destinations for migrants and forcibly displaced people. Secondary cities in low- and middle-income countries are growing fastest, often welcoming large numbers of people without the infrastructure, services, or governance capacity to keep pace. At the same time, global displacement has reached record levels, and climate impacts are pushing more people toward urban centres. These are not temporary shocks but structural transformations that will shape development trajectories for decades. Cities have become de facto migration actors, managing service provision, social cohesion, and labour markets. Yet they have limited options to shape national or international governance processes or access funding. This persistent mismatch between where migration happens and where migration policy is decided has encouraged cities to engage in city diplomacy and increase their influence. |
| Objetivos | Migrants, including forcibly displaced people, in secondary cities can contribute to the sustainable development and peaceful, inclusive, climate resilient, and prosperous cities. |
