Ageing and Health in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Economic hardship, inadequate healthcare without assisted living, limited social services and societal biases exacerbate isolation and difficulties of older people in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project supports the efforts of the Swiss Red Cross to introduce and scale up sustainable active healthy ageing services and affordable home-based care for older people. The latter are provided by the national Red Cross in cooperation with their local branches and municipalities.

Contexto | The population of Bosnia and Herzegovina is rapidly ageing. Older people belong to the most vulnerable and poorest population. The health and social care systems are characterized by significant fragmentation, leading to administrative inefficiencies, inequalities and gaps in service delivery, particularly affecting long-term care for the older people and those with disabilities. Adequate and affordable healthcare and assisted living for older people is missing. Everyday life is difficult for older people and the quality of their life is often low. |
Objetivos | Older people in Bosnia and Herzegovina benefit from improved ageing and health services, gain better health and increase their wellbeing. |
Grupos destinarios | End Project beneficiaries are primarily older and chronically ill women and men. Over 14,350 persons will directly benefit from Phase 2. Over 3,000 older persons will receive home-based care and over 1,500 of their family members will benefit from support. At least 100 auxiliary nurses and 200 volunteers will be engaged in service provision. Around 9,500 older people will participate in creating age-friendly communities with their municipalities. Around 50 Red Cross staff members will be engaged in management and coordination. Phase 2 will be implemented in 25 municipalities in both entities and Brcko District. |
