Strengthening the institutional and operational capacities of the Civil Protection of the Capital District for disaster risk management.

The recent earthquakes highlighted the urgent need to strengthen emergency response capacities in Venezuela. This project will support the Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Management Authority of the Capital District by enhancing its operational, logistical, communication and coordination capacities for disaster preparedness and response. Implemented by the Venezuelan Red Cross, in partnership with the German Red Cross and with Swiss support, the intervention will contribute to a more effective, coordinated and resilient disaster risk management system for the benefit of vulnerable communities.

Contexto On June 24, 2026, two earthquakes with preliminary magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 struck the central coastal region of Venezuela, triggering one of the worst emergencies in recent decades. Eleven days after the event, more than 3,300 deaths and approximately 16,800 injuries were reported, along with widespread damage to infrastructure, healthcare facilities, homes, and basic services. The magnitude of the disaster overwhelmed the operational capacities available during the initial response phase and highlighted the need to continue strengthening preparedness, inter-institutional coordination, logistics, and response mechanisms for large-scale emergencies.
Objetivos Contribute to strengthening preparedness and response capacity to emergencies and disasters in Capital District and the central coastal region of Venezuela through the operational reinforce of the National Disaster Risk Management System.
