GLO: Linking Science, Policy, Action SPA

Projet terminé

The last couple of years have seen a multitude of mitigation oriented initiatives, some of them complementary to the stalling United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations. This programme proposes to link the project experience of the SDC to international efforts aimed at realising mitigation complementary to the UNFCCC. The objective is to contribute to climate change mitigation and to poverty reduction.

Contexte

Climate change is seen as one of the greatest threats to all development objectives as it has the potential to undermine all three dimensions of sustainability (i.e. social, environmental, and economic sustainability). Still, progress of global and binding actions as sought through Climate Change negotiations within the UNFCCC has appeared elusive during the latest negotiation rounds. This is contrasted by scientific evidence ascertaining that the atmosphere and oceans are warming at unprecedented rates in historical record, that ice masses are declining and sea levels are rising, and that climate change is substantially anthropogenic. Further recent scientific work has in addition highlighted the importance of short lived climate pollutants for near term global warming.

Objectifs

The objective of the programme is to contribute to climate change mitigation and to poverty reduction through sustainable economic growth by decreasing vulnerabilities and reducing the environmental impact of economic growth. The objective is achieved by contributing to reductions in CO2 and Short Lived Climate Pollutants emissions leading to a healthier environment, improving public health through air quality control, supporting local job creation, and reducing agricultural losses.

Groupes cibles

The ultimate beneficiaries of the programme are populations – and in particular the poor parts of these populations – that are affected by and vulnerable to: climate change, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and agricultural losses. The programme’s target audience are policy makers worldwide.

Effets à moyen terme
  1. Improved air quality.
  2. Improved public health.
  3. Reduced agricultural losses.
  4. Climate friendly laws adopted in countries where the Climate Parliament is active.
