Contexte |
On 6 September, Typhoon Yagi, most powerful storm in the past 30 years, the world's second-most powerful tropical cyclone of 2024, affected the Philippines and made landfall in Hainan, southern China. It was the strongest storm to hit the region in over a decade, with wind speeds > 230 km/h. At least 20 people were killed in the Philippines, 4 were killed and 92 were injured in China. In Vietnam, on 7 September, around 6:00 UTC, the typhoon generated winds of up to 166 km/h and made landfall on island districts of the northern part of the country, causing significant damage across the Red River Delta. 50,000 people were evacuated and approximately 450,000 military personnel deployed to support the local population. Skies were overcast in the capital, Hanoi, with occasional rain Monday morning as workers cleared the uprooted trees, fallen billboards and toppled electricity poles. Heavy rain continued in northwestern Vietnam; it could exceed 40 centimeters (15 inches) in places. Floods and landslides expected in several northern mountainous provinces. |
