Disaster Risk Reduction Programme 2013-2017

Progetto concluso

Climate change will strongly affect Central America. DRR and CCA have become a public policy priority in Nicaragua and Honduras. The SDC DRR programme supports institutions at the regional, national and local level to strengthen response capacities and increase resilience. Capacities will be enhanced in local development planning, research, academic curricula, and community mobilization. Successful approaches will be consolidated, refined and scaled up.

Contesto

Central America is prone to natural disasters. Climate Change (CC) will increase the risk of disasters. Honduras and Nicaragua rank in the first and third positions in the climate risk index 2013. Poverty and traditional farming practices that degrade soils increase the vulnerability of rural families. Regional and national DRR and CCA systems remain weak.

Obiettivi

Reduction of environmental vulnerability and strengthening the resilience of poor populations to the effects of climate change and other natural hazards.

Gruppi target

Poor rural families and their communities in the dry regions of Honduras and Nicaragua, the most vulnerable population group in the two coun-tries. The programme will strengthen the capacities and catalyze the efforts of key regional, national and local bodies to engage directly with this population.

Effetti a medio termine

People in situations of vulnerability have adapted their land, forest and water use practices to the effects of climate change in selected territo-ries. Public and private actors have managed resources for disaster risk reduction and climate change adap-tation in an effective manner.
