Access to education is a significant challenge in Afghanistan, especially for girls, street working and internally displaced children. Although considerable progress has been made since 2001 with school enrolment rising from less than a million (all male) to 9.2 million students in 2015 of which 39% are girls and the number of schools increasing from 3’400 to over 16’400, the ongoing conflict continues to have a negative effect on the level and quality of education. Children are particularly affected by the conflict and the difficult socio-economic conditions and there is widespread discrimination, particularly gender related. While children and youth make up over two thirds of Afghanistan’s population, with almost 50% of Afghans under the age of 15, they are largely excluded from participation in the society. In addition, Afghan children and youth have scarce opportunities for leisure, sports and play that hamper their social networking and psychosocial learning potentials. Girls and young women in particular are unable to play sports in public areas due to socio-cultural barriers. Physical education is a low priority in schools and female students are often excluded from participation in these activities.
Skateistan offers access to quality educational, sport and recreational opportunities for children and youth of all backgrounds particularly girls and marginalized children through a combination of teaching educational art-based curricula and skateboarding trainings. Skateistan increases children and youth confidence, abilities and involvement in their communities as well as contributes to strengthen their social networks. Skateistan offers free weekly skateboarding and educational programming for over 1’000 Afghan boys and girls (over 40%) at its two facilities in Kabul and Mazar-e-Sharif.
SDC contributes to Skateistan with a single phase contribution and is co-funding the project from 1 March 2014 to 30 June 2017. Having supported Skateistan over these years and assessing its results and achievements and the potential of the organization observed in addressing children’s rights to education and in recreational and sport activities, the Swiss Cooperation Office in Afghanistan proposes a long-term contribution, complementary to its support to formal basic education.
