International Dialogue on Migration and Development

Progetto concluso

The international dialogue on migration and development subsumes different global processes and activities by a number of key stakeholders. In this context, the debate on migration and development has evolved rapidly and has generated outcomes that improve the protection of migrants and enhance their development contribution. Switzerland has played a significant role in this process. SDC will continue supporting relevant initiatives, institutions and partners to further strengthen the global governance on migration and development.

Contesto

The notion of migration being a factor for sustainable development has reached the global political agenda. Worldwide migration as well as development policies and institutional frameworks have been improved, new actors entered the dialogue process, the base of involved stakeholders broadened and the forging of new partnerships triggered. Switzerland has played a pivotal role in the process, leading several international initiatives, substantiating the dialogue with experience from the field and strategically supporting and partnering with key actors. With the expected anchoring of migration in the Sustainable Development Goals a high point of this engagement will be reached opening opportunities to further strengthen the global migration and development governance.

Obiettivi

The global migration and development governance is fit to implement an effective and inclusive agenda on migration that integrates development and protects the human rights of migrants.

Gruppi target

The primary target groups are all governmental and non-governmental actors involved in the international dialogue. By improving the global migration and development governance, there will be trickledown effects on regional and national policies, impacting the lives of the migrants and their families.

Effetti a medio termine

Outcome 1: The international migration and development processes are more inclusive, more effective in producing transformative policy outcomes and have a stronger focus on development perspectives.

Outcome 2: Stakeholders have the means to effectively contribute to the migration and development dialogue.

Outcome 3: The international migration and development agenda is broadened and strengthened by substantiating it with practical experience and academic evidence.

Risultati fasi precedenti:  

Switzerland further solidified its leading role in the international dialogue on migration and development. SDC supported a number of processes and partners, contributed to several milestones in the field of migration and development, notably: Almost certainly anchoring migration in the Sustainable Development Goals; support the strengthening of development aspects in the Global Forum on Migration and Development; the adoption of the High Level Dialogue declaration, the strengthening of the ILO as actor in this field, strengthening the capacities of civil society actors.

Some of the key factors that allowed Switzerland to play a leading role were: The coherence and continuity in Switzerland’s policy messages on migration and development; the transparency in it’s messaging and the absence of any hidden agenda; the flexibility to react to opportunities; the growing network of governments, civil society, international organizations and academia as well as the credibility gained by having practical experience from the field to substantiate it’s policy messages.
