Ethiopian national Segenet Kelemu has been appointed Director-General of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Nairobi. The institute, which conducts research on tropical insects to promote development, is funded by a consortium of donors, including the SDC.

icipe's work aims to protect the health of human beings, animals, plants and the environment. The institute is funded by a consortium of donors comprised of private associations, UN organisations and other public sector actors.

The SDC, for its part, has been supporting icipe since 1996. Its annual contribution for the 2011-2013 period amounts to CHF 1.6 million. The SDC has also earmarked a contribution of CHF 1.9 million for the construction of a laboratory.

Segenet Kelemu succeeds German national Christian Borgemeister, who has headed icipe since 2005.
