Bern, Press releases, 24.09.2009

The European Union and Iran have asked Switzerland to organise a meeting between the EU High Representative, Javier Solana, and the Iranian chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili. The meeting will take place in Geneva on 1 October 2009.

The EU, as representative of the EU 3+3 (Germany, France, the UK, China, Russia and the US) together with Iran have officially asked Switzerland whether it would be prepared to host talks between the parties on 1 October 2009. The last such talks were also organised by Switzerland and took place in Geneva on 19 July 2008.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) has given an affirmative answer to the request on the basis of the good offices that Switzerland provides as part of its foreign policy. The meeting will take place in Geneva. The EU 3+3 delegation will be led by the High Representative of the EU, Javier Solana. The Secretary of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council and Chief Negotiator for Nuclear Issues, Saeed Jalili, will head the Iranian delegation.

Switzerland has always advocated a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear question. It welcomes and supports the continuation of direct talks.
