Bern, Press releases, 22.03.2010

On 24 March Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey will travel to Brussels for talks with Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission. This will be Mrs Calmy-Rey's first official meeting with Mrs Ashton since the latter took up her post.

Since the entry into force of the Lisbon Agreement, Catherine Ashton has been responsible for the EU's external relations both in the Council of Ministers and in the European Commission, which means that she is a centrally important interlocutor for Switzerland.

The meeting will take stock of bilateral relations between Switzerland and the EU. Topics will include the implementation of existing agreements, the progress of ongoing negotiations and institutional questions such as the adaptation of agreements to legal developments in the EU and the effects of Lisbon-related EU reforms on relations with Switzerland.

International issues that are important for the EU as well as for Switzerland will also be on the agenda. These include the situation in South Caucasus, the process of rapprochement between Armenia and Turkey, the Near East conflict and the situation in Iran. The crisis in relations with Libya will also be discussed.
