Bern, Press releases, 24.03.2010

For the years 2010 and 2011 Switzerland will provide financial support totalling CHF 42 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). Today, the Federal Council has decided on this amount which will be covered by the current framework credit for the Swiss Confederation’s Humanitarian Aid.

The WFP purchases a large part of its food in developing countries and emerging market economies as a way to strengthen agricultural production capacities in these countries. Switzerland supports this approach and for this reason has earmarked the bulk of its contribution for this purpose.

The Federal Council’s support also contains cash and natural contributions including Swiss dairy products.

The WFP is the main partner of the Confederation’s Humanitarian Aid in the field of international food aid. In 2009, the WFP brought food aid to 100 million people in 77 countries. The majority of recipients are the victims of natural disasters, internally displaced persons and refugees. The WFP is also active in complex relief operations, situations involving chronic food insecurity, as well as post-conflict situations.
