FDFA supports the dissolution of the Global Humanitarian Forum with socially compatible measures

The Global Humanitarian Forum (GHF) has played a positive role in promoting dialogue on the major global humanitarian challenges by showcasing, in particular, the impact of climate change on the human being. The objectives of the GHF will continue to be pursued by integrating a part of its topics into the World Economic Forum (WEF) within the scope of its annual meeting in Davos.

Switzerland has until now provided financial support for the work of the GHF in Geneva. However, at the end of 2009, funding shortfalls came to light. As a private foundation, the GHF acts on its own responsibility. The federal authorities in Bern subsequently analysed the difficult situation of the GHF, evaluating a number of possible options. 

In an attempt to find a socially acceptable solution, the FDFA will now ensure the payment of salaries and social contributions for GHF staff during the contractual period of notice. At the same time, it will also take over half of the GHF’s outstanding debts. A total funding package of CHF 1.75 million, has been planned for this purpose. The remaining half of the outstanding debts will be borne by another member of the GHF foundation board.  

The GHF is a foundation under Swiss law that was established in 2007. To date, the Swiss Confederation has supported the foundation's activities with an annual contribution of CHF 1 million. On 19 March 2010, the Confederation's foundation supervisory authority passed an interim injunction on the GHF. This injunction required the GHF to produce a revised interim report and to submit either a refinancing plan or a justified appeal for dissolution and liquidation to the supervisory authority. Meanwhile, the foundation board has decided to discontinue GHF activities.
