Minister of Foreign Affairs to attend Non Proliferation Treaty Conference

Bearing in mind the changes that have taken place in recent years in relations between the powers, efforts in the area of disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation have become increasingly important. Switzerland’s commitment to this cause has traditionally been very strong, and the Confederation intends to further strengthen its efforts to reduce the risks of proliferation and of nuclear conflict. 

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) opened for signature in 1968. It has been signed by almost all nations. The purpose of the Treaty is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons, further the goal of nuclear disarmament and promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy in a responsible way. Its application is ensured by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). NPT Conferences are held every five years to discuss ways to improve implementation of the Treaty objectives. The 8th Review Conference takes place this year, 3-28 May, in New York.
