Press releases, 25.04.2022

President Ignazio Cassis will travel to London this week where he will meet with Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Foreign Minister Elizabeth Truss on Thursday, 28 April. The two sides will discuss ways of deepening bilateral relations. Other topics on the agenda include Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and its consequences, as well as the policies of Switzerland and the UK with regard to Europe.

The visit will focus on ways of deepening political, economic and scientific cooperation between Switzerland and the UK with a view to gauging the potential in terms of bilateral relations. Key areas for consideration include trade, financial services, research and innovation, and mobility. In view of the war in Ukraine, the two sides will discuss ways of strengthening European security and the rules-based international order.

Switzerland and the UK enjoy excellent and close relations, with a particular focus on economic and financial market matters. The UK is Switzerland's eight most important trading partner (excluding precious metals). The UK's decision to leave the EU meant that provisions previously governed by bilateral agreements with the EU had to be agreed bilaterally. A number of successor agreements have now been applied since 1 January 2021.
