Ukraine: Anerkennung für den Beitrag der Schweiz im Sanktionsbereich

State Secretary Martina Hirayama at Europa Forum Wachau

On 23 June, State Secretary Martina Hirayama attended the Europa Forum Wachau in Stift Göttweig (Austria). The theme this year is ‘Building a resilient, green and competitive Europe’. While at the conference, State Secretary Hirayama also held bilateral talks with Martin Polaschek, the Austrian Minister for Education, Science and Research.


Euclid to study the evolution of the universe over the last ten billion years: ESA online media invitation, June 23rd 2023

The Euclid space telescope, part of the European Space Agency's mission of the same name, will be launched in early July 2023 from Cape Canaveral in Florida on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The mission is dedicated to cosmology: the study of the origin, nature, structure and evolution of the Universe, and will attempt to increase our knowledge of two still mysterious components, dark energy and dark matter.


Federal Council approves parameters for EU negotiating mandate

At its meeting on 21 June 2023, the Federal Council approved the parameters for a negotiating mandate with the EU. Discussions with the EU will continue on this basis, with a view to resolving any outstanding issues. If discussions with the EU and internal work continue to progress satisfactorily, the Federal Council will prepare for the adoption of a negotiating mandate by the end of the year.


Ignazio Cassis receives Georgian foreign minister Ilia Darchiashvili in Bern

The head of the FDFA, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, received the Georgian minister of foreign affairs, Ilia Darchiashvili, on an official visit to Bern on Monday 19 June 2023. Talks focused on the further development of bilateral relations, the situation in the South Caucasus and multilateral cooperation. Of note in Georgian–Swiss relations are the growth in trade between the two nations, as well as Switzerland's good offices and its long-standing involvement in the region.


Switzerland and United Kingdom sign agreement on mutual recognition of professional qualifications

Meeting in London on 14 June 2023, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and British Secretary of State for Business and Trade Kemi Badenoch signed an agreement on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications. For Switzerland, this is the second such agreement signed with a partner outside the EU, the first one being the agreement signed with Quebec in 2022.


Federal Council adopts report Assessment of Swiss-EU relations

At its meeting on 9 June 2023, the Federal Council definitively adopted the report on relations between Switzerland and the European Union and submitted it to the Federal Assembly. The report was deliberated in December 2022 and adopted subject to the outcome of the consultation of the Foreign Affairs Committees of both chambers of Parliament.


Swiss Air Force to participate in multinational helicopter exercise in Portugal

From 7 to 21 June, members of the Swiss Air Force will train with three Super Puma and Cougar helicopters in Beja, Portugal. The purpose of the multinational Hotblade Helicopter Exercise is to compare and develop tactical capabilities with other countries and improve interoperability. Switzerland is participating in the exercise for the first time.


Flankierende Massnahmen und Bekämpfung der Schwarzarbeit: Kontrollvolumen im Jahr 2022 erhöht

Die Vollzugsstellen haben im Rahmen der flankierenden Massnahmen (FlaM) und des Bundesgesetzes gegen die Schwarzarbeit (BGSA) im vergangenen Jahr ihre Kontrolltätigkeit erhöht. Das Jahr 2022 stand im Zeichen der Aufhebung der coronabedingten Einschränkungen. Das FlaM-Mindestkontrollziel wurde erneut erreicht und die Kontrolltätigkeit weiter erhöht. Die festgestellten Lohnverstösse und -unterbietungen verblieben auf ähnlichem Niveau wie vor der Krise.


New goods traffic system «Passar» goes live

On June 1st 2023, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) launches the first stage of «Passar», the new goods traffic system and one of the central elements of the digitalisation and transformation programme DaziT. Passar gradually contributes to the simplification and acceleration of the cross-border traffic of goods. The staged changeover from the previous IT systems to Passar was coordinated with representatives of the economy.


Almost CHF 25 billion dedicated to research in Switzerland in 2021

Switzerland dedicated CHF 24.6 billion to R&D in 2021. This represents an average annual increase of 4% compared with 2019, the year of the last survey. These activities were mainly carried out within higher education institutions (28%) and private enterprises (68%) by almost 140 000 persons. In international comparison, Switzerland remains one of the most research-intensive economies. These are the main results of the Federal Statistical Office’s (FSO) statistics on "research and development in Switzerland".
