Horizon package: Federal Council to fund further transitional measures for 2023 calls

The Federal Council decided on 24 May to adopt transitional measures relating to the Horizon package 2021–2027 (Horizon Europe, Euratom programme, ITER and Digital Europe Programme). It will provide CHF 625 million in funding for 2023 calls for proposals. Rapid association to the Horizon package remains the Federal Council's goal.


Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter meets Vice-President Nadia Calviño in Madrid

On 22 May 2023, Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter met the First Vice-President of the Spanish Government and Minister for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, as well as the Governor of the Bank of Spain, Pablo Hernández de Cos, in Madrid. They discussed current financial and tax issues in the run-up to Spain's presidency of the Council of the European Union.


Swiss-Lithuanian Cooperation Programme launched

On 22 May 2023, the Ambassador of Switzerland and the Lithuanian Minister of Finance signed the implementation agreement for the Swiss-Lithuanian Cooperation Programme under the second Swiss contribution to selected EU member states. The contribution to Lithuania amounts to 45.2 million Swiss francs and will support programmes in Lithuania in the fields of health, civic participation and vocational education.


Ignazio Cassis meets Icelandic foreign minister in Zurich

On Monday afternoon, 22 May 2023, the head of the FDFA, Ignazio Cassis, received his Icelandic counterpart, Þórdís Kolbrún R. Gylfadóttir, for an official working visit in Zurich. They discussed bilateral relations, the two countries' work in the Council of Europe, and the future path of Europe.


State Secretary Martina Hirayama on official visit to Madrid

Switzerland and the UK launch negotiations

Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and UK Secretary of State for International Trade, Kemi Badenoch, marked the beginning of negotiations on further developing the bilateral trade agreement. The first round of negotiations will take place in London in May.


President Berset to attend Council of Europe summit in Reykjavík and hold talks with Icelandic government

For the fourth time in the 74-year history of the Council of Europe, the heads of state and government of the organisation’s member states will gather next week for a summit. The Swiss delegation to the summit in Reykjavík will be led by President Alain Berset. Prior to the summit, he will meet with Iceland's Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir on Tuesday, 16 May, to discuss current international issues and, above all, cooperation on climate issues.


Livia Leu named Swiss ambassador to Germany

At its meeting on 10 May 2023, the Federal Council appointed State Secretary Livia Leu as Swiss ambassador to Germany. She will take up her new post in autumn 2023, replacing Paul Seger, who is retiring. The FDFA is appointing a selection committee to select Livia Leu's successor. The Federal Council has announced further appointments as part of the usual transfer rotation.


Switzerland joins efforts aimed at securing global supply and value chains

Switzerland wants to help make global supply and value chains more secure and so strengthen their resilience. It is adding its name to a joint statement supported by 28 states and associations of states, including the EU, the USA and Germany. The move is in line with the Federal Council's foreign economic strategy.


FDFA State Secretary Livia Leu holds political consultations with Kosovo

On 9 May, FDFA State Secretary Livia Leu held political consultations in Bern with Kosovo's Deputy Foreign Minister Kreshnik Ahmeti. The meeting focused on bilateral matters, the relations between Kosovo and Serbia, Swiss support for the EU normalisation process between the two countries and the implications for the Western Balkans of the war against Ukraine.



Meeting of Joint Swiss-British Committee for Science and Innovation

On 2 May 2023, State Secretary Martina Hirayama and British Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation, George Freeman, opened the first meeting of the Joint Swiss-British Committee for Science and Innovation. This meeting between the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and the British Department for Science, Innovation and Technology was mainly centred on bilateral cooperation in research and innovation.
