Measures for protecting endangered ecosystems

Switzerland is financing two biodiversity projects in Slovakia for the protection of endangered ecosystems. One project is concerned with monitoring and researching forests, while the second aims to preserve and protect natural areas and habitats in the Slovak Carpathian mountains. The Swiss contribution to these two projects totals around CHF 4.2 million.

The bilateral Framework Agreement foresees the possibility of utilizing a maximum of 1.5% of the total allocation to cover certain management costs in the beneficiary country. Wastewater treatment in Dlhé nad Cirochou

Only around 65% of the population of Slovakia live in houses connected to a sewer network. Switzerland has supported the municipality of Dlhé nad Cirochou with the construction of a 6.9 kilometre sewer network. This will give more than 1,100 inhabitants access to the municipality’s wastewater system. In addition, the wastewater treatment system will be expanded, allowing wastewater to be treated for a further 1,400 residents.

Wastewater Collection and Treatment Project Dvorniky

Dvorniky is located in the west of the country, in the region of Trnava, which, despite its proximity to the capital Bratislava, is still quite underdeveloped compared to the rest of the country. The municipality lags behind in relation to the quality of waste water collection and treatment and has no waste water network system. Only about 60% of the population live in houses that are connected to a public sewage system, which is a very low figure compared to the average in the EU-15 (84.4%). The project aims to provide an adapted and affordable waste water collection and treatment infrastructure and to improve the quality of the underground and surface waters in the region.
