Tchad IOM Contribution Sudan crisis 2023

Project completed

This contribution aims at supporting IOM’s response to the needs of Chadian returnees having fled Sudan. IOM’s emergency response supports the returnees’ households through a nexus approach, which combines emergency humanitarian assistance (shelter, NFIs, etc,) and livelihood support to reduce their dependency on humanitarian assistance, therefore contributing to local and more sustainable development.

Background Since fighting broke out in Sudan in mid-April 2023, many people have fled violence to seek safety in Chad. Among the new arrivals, more than 67’700 Chadian returnees have been displaced from their homes and are living in temporary displacement sites primarily in the provinces of Ouaddai and Sila. As the violence increases, especially in the Darfur region, the number of incoming returnees is expected to rise to 80,000. In addition, 135 third-country nationals fleeing Sudan have found safety in Chad since the start of the conflict.
