Background | The Sudan crisis continues to worsen the humanitarian situation in South Sudan, with over 1.19 million displaced individuals arriving since April 2023 (IOM/UNHCR, July 2025). Of these, 68% are South Sudanese returnees and 32% are refugees, 78% of whom are women and children. Displaced populations in Gorom refugee camp and Mangalla face urgent needs in protection, food security, and livelihoods. In response, South Sudan, with partners, developed a National Durable Solutions Strategy focusing on security, basic services, peacebuilding, and livelihoods. This progressive policy enabled initiatives like Inkomoko’s economic empowerment and financial literacy programs, which fill critical gaps. As South Sudan endures protracted displacement, supporting both displaced and host communities is essential. With Mastercard Foundation as a strategic partner, this marks SCO Juba’s first engagement with the Foundation, as private sector donors play an increasing role amid a growing funding crisis. |
Objectives | To improve social integration, financial literacy and inclusion, and economic self-reliance for refugees, returnees, IDPs and host communities in Gorom Refugee Settlement and Mangala IDP sites in Juba, through market-led, private sector solutions that strengthen local Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). |
