Violence against women and girls is one of the most devastating human rights violations in the world and it is not acceptable. It is a life-threatening health and protection issue, which is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power and harmful norms. Gender-based violence prevents women and girls from fully participating in society. It weakens the social fabric that binds families and communities together, preventing countries from achieving social stability and economic development.
Gender-based violence increases during every type of emergency – whether economic crises, conflict or disease outbreaks. The UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted an alarming rise of domestic violence reports during the pandemic lockdowns worldwide. Mr. Guterres called on all governments to prioritize women’s safety through an assertive action preventing and responding to violence against women.
That is why, on November 25, we acknowledge the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This campaign is an invaluable tool for communities around the world to raise important issues and support difficult public conversations around gender-based violence.
We stand with all those who have joined the United Nations Secretary-General’s Campaign UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women. We aspire to end gender-based violence through bilateral cooperation with Kazakhstan, regional cooperation with Central Asian nations and multilateral support through international organizations.
We remain committed to a continued partnership with Kazakhstan as we develop plans and strategies for ongoing COVID-19 response measures and economic recovery. We urge that addressing gender-based violence and gender equality be an integral part of any recovery strategy. Together we can achieve the world where women and girls have the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential, live free from violence and, of course, live their dreams.
