Since September 2014, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid (SDC/HA) has contributed to activities in response to the Northeast crisis provoked by the Boko Haram armed insurgency group.
SDC/HA financial support is provided to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations (UN) and International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs).
SDC Humanitarian Affairs Advisers based in Nigeria and Chad are closely monitoring the developments related to the crisis in northern Nigeria, also in light of the consequences it entails for the whole Lake Chad region.
Through its contributions to the crisis response, Switzerland ranks among the 10 top donors. In 2019 (situation 11/2019), the Swiss contributions to Nigeria amount to 9 mio. CHF (19 mio. CHF to the Lake Chad Region). Multilateral contributions have strengthened the capacity of the ICRC and major UN agencies involved in activities focused on bringing assistance to vulnerable refugees, displaced and local hosting communities.
The SDC focuses its activities on food security, protection and education.
