The Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of communications manager as of 1 July 2022. This is a locally recruited position. You will be working within the communications team and cooperate closely with the mission management, the peace and security team as well as the legal team and the sustainable development and humanitarian affairs team. You will be in charge of various communication and speech writing tasks arising in the context of Switzerland's term on the United Nations Security Council (2023-2024), should Switzerland be elected. 

Our ideal candidate is an outgoing, proactive, eloquent individual with an excellent command of French and English as a working language, both orally and in writing, and of high linguistic precision. He or she is very familiar with diplomatic language, tone and finesse. Ideally, our candidate has already gained experience in journalism and /or in international diplomacy, is an expert in political communication and political messaging with in-depth knowledge of the United Nations system, or has been working for one of the permanent or observer missions at the United Nations. He or she has also a solid knowledge of the Swiss political system and Swiss foreign policy. 

Duties and responsibilities

  • In support of the head of mission and communications team, managing the coherent and professional communication of the Swiss mission in matters related to the work of the United Nations Security Council, of other organs and entities, and to Swiss foreign policy
  • Drafting of speeches, official statements and communication products of the mission. Official statements are, as a rule, written and delivered in French
  • Proactive advice, support and preparation of the head of mission and head of communications when interacting with the media (Press, TV, Radio) and with other New York based permanent representations and stakeholders on Security Council and U.N.-related matters
  • Performance of various communication tasks

Requirements

  • Academic credentials and a minimum of three years professional experience in a communications and/or policy advisor position
  • Experience and/or training as a journalist is an advantage
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in diplomatic language and U.N. jargon
  • Strong ability to understand the subtleties of political language and operating in a sensitive political context
  • Solid knowledge of the Swiss political system and Swiss foreign policy.
  • Accuracy and diligence when drafting and presenting, even under time pressure.
  • Ideally a native French speaker. An excellent command of English as a working language is essential, as well as a good knowledge or very good passive language skills of German. 
  • Strong social skills, resilience and an excellent ability to develop networks fast. 
  • High stress resistance and a readiness to work outside office hours when necessary.

Under the political direction of the Swiss government, the Mission participates in the work of the UN’s principal organs (General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council). Furthermore, Switzerland recently obtained a seat on the Security Council for the term 2023-2024.

Job description

The Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Team at the Swiss Mission is looking to recruit a reliable, dynamic and well-organized person with a flair for administrative tasks and an interest in working in the fast-paced multilateral environment of the United Nations in New York. The successful candidate will support the Mission during a crucial phase, including during Switzerland’s two-year mandate as Council member (January 2023 - December 2024). The successful candidate displays strong administrative skills and a highly structured approach to managing an important volume of information, while keeping track of multiple, parallel processes and thriving under pressure. Our ideal candidate combines these skills with an interest in multilateral affairs and a quick grasp of UN processes and protocol. The candidate will be closely working with another administrative assistant in the team and will the counterparts of the other teams. 

Responsibilities

  • Administrative and logistical support to the Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs Team (10 persons), including management of contacts and scheduling; correspondence in English and French/German; planning and assisting during events (in-person/virtual) and visits of high-level delegations; travel arrangements, expenses and filing of documents
  • Information management of a consistently high volume of correspondence; need to prioritize time-sensitive items and dispatch in a reliable manner throughout the Mission and to external recipients
  • In close collaboration with the Personal Assistants to the Head of Mission (HoM) and Deputy HoM: preparation of meetings, including documentation, background information, and logistical support
  • Upon qualifications: Assist in reporting, organization of high-level visits and events, independently and/or in support of other members of the team

Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in an international setting and in administrative roles; prior experience with the United Nations system a plus.
  • Fluency in English, excellent knowledge of French or another Swiss official language (German or Italian) required
  • Strong organizational and information management skills, ability to work under pressure and multi-task
  • Full computer literacy with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)
  • High degree of personal integrity and trustworthiness, strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge and experience in the field of corporate sustainability (fostering sustainability practices the office) an asset

Humanitarian Policy Advisor (100% temporary replacement maternity leave)

Job description

We are looking for a person with a profile in multilateral humanitarian affairs / IHL / Disaster Risk Reduction, who is highly motivated to work in a challenging, multilateral setting and within the UN framework. You have strong negotiation, analytical and synthesis skills and are comfortable dealing with issues of a certain intellectual complexity, often under time constraints. You like to develop negotiation strategies, pursuing your goals with tenacity and a set of highly developed social skills, including an interest in intercultural exchanges.

You have a master degree in a field relevant to this position. Professional experience working for a Permanent Mission at the UN, a representation of Switzerland or in the Swiss federal administration would be an asset.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To support the Permanent Mission of Switzerland, in close coordination with the relevant federal offices in Berne, in multilateral humanitarian matters, and follow closely related discussions and trends.
  • Represent Switzerland's interests in the above-mentioned field in intergovernmental processes, including negotiations of resolutions in the General Assembly and other UN bodies, as well as with the Permanent Missions of other UN Member States, the UN Secretariat and its organs and entities.
  • To elaborate and defend Swiss positions in the framework of negotiations.
  • To support capital in the preparation of Swiss positions, contributing to the drafting of formal Swiss interventions or communication elements (including for social media).
  • To gather information, to provide political analysis in the above-mentioned fields, and to write reports on a regular basis.
  • To identify opportunities and initiatives for Switzerland in the above-mentioned areas, to participate in meetings and working groups and report on these.
  • To organize, accompany and support delegations visiting the Permanent Mission of Switzerland

Skills required

  • Master's degree in relevant field.
  • Solid knowledge of international politics and ideally Swiss foreign policy, with a strong interest in areas related to humanitarian affairs / IHL.
  • Experience with multilateral organizations or a solid knowledge of the work of multilateral organizations, the multilateral architecture and its instruments.
  • Great capacity for analysis and synthesis, with a certain ease in dealing with complex issues.
  • Strong interest in negotiation and ability to work in an intense working environment requiring good resistance to stress and excellent self-management capacities.
