Since 9 July 2011, the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) has been working to consolidate peace and security, and to help establish the conditions necessary for the development of this county as an independent State.

At the referendum held in January 2011, the South Sudanese population voted by an overwhelming majority of 98.8% in favour of independence from the north of Soudan. The UNMISS has set up a structure of counsel and support in order to create a South Sudanese police force able to respond to the numerous challenges that are to be faced by this young nation.
