EGY, GIZ, Green Inclusive Agriculture
The project aims to improve income and contribute to poverty alleviation of 14000 Egyptian small older farmers and agricultural workers by building their ability to better respond to climate change using climate smart agriculture, improving market linkage and promoting entrepreneurship in selected villages in Upper Egypt.

- The project will target 14,000 beneficiaries, which include small-scale farmers and seasonal workers, targeting at least 20% women and 25% youth in rural communities.
- 185 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME) and 25 support institutions will be supported.
- The project will work in Upper Egypt, with a focus on Beni Suef, Minya, Assuit, and Sohag.

- With Government Initiatives “Haya Karima” in Upper Egypt, and “Nexus Water, Food Energy (NWFE)”
- Cooperation with IFAD projects “Sustainable Transformation for Agricultural Resilience in Upper Egypt and “Climate-Resilient On-Farm Water Management in Nile Valley & Delta and the World Bank funded “Adaptation of Crop Production in the Nile Valley and Delta” will be explored
- Synergies with Swiss projects as for example “Inclusive Green Growth in Egypt” (IGGE) and Livelihoods for Women in Upper Egypt Project”
- Synergies with development partners FAO, WFP, UNIDO.

Contesto | Egypt is facing increasing economic pressures, over-proportionally affecting the poor, in particular in Upper Egypt, where 55% of the population, remains below the poverty line. Agriculture, a key economic sector in Egypt, is at risk from climate change, such as heat waves, water scarcity and increased pest load is estimated to lose up to by 15% - 50% of its productivity by 2050. Smallholder farmers in Upper Egypt are challenged by weak extension services and lack of access to technical information, disfunctioning cooperatives and poor market access, exacerbated by the need to adapt to climate and economic changes. Women, mainly present in post-harvest activities, face additional challenges, in terms of access to productive assets, financing and financial products and information. |

Risultati principali attesi: Output 1: The capacities of smallholder farmers to identify and adapt to climate change in the supported value chains are strengthened considering climate-adapted and economically viable approaches Output 2: The capacities of entrepreneurs of micro, small and medium enterprises (start-ups and established MSME) to manage and grow their businesses along selected value chains are strengthened considering economic, social and environmental aspects. Output 3: Business relationships between smallholders and companies within selected value chains are strengthened. Output 4: The provision of public and private services for innovation in smallholder agriculture and related agribusiness has been strengthened. Risultati fasi precedenti: During a previous phase (not funded by SDC), the project reached over 10’000 farmers, increasing income, productivity and access to markets in Minya and Beni Sueif Governorates, highlighting challenges on climate change adaptation and the need for a holistic approach to address it. The opening phase scientifically assessed climate change vulnerability, gender and nutrition aspects of agriculture value chains, and selected 6 main crops and target governorates in coordination with the ministry of agriculture and established needs and baselines for current productivity and income of target beneficiaries. |
