Federal Council stresses Africa’s importance and adopts first continent-wide strategy

At its meeting on 13 January 2021 the Federal Council approved a strategy on Sub-Saharan Africa for the first time. The countries of North Africa are already covered by the MENA strategy adopted by the Federal Council on 14 October 2020. The new strategy recognises the great diversity of the African continent and the challenges and opportunities it presents. It sets out Switzerland's priorities and measures in the region for the 2021–24 period. In addition to peace, the core elements of the strategy are security and human rights, migration, prosperity, sustainability and digitalisation, areas in which the strategy builds on a tradition of partnership with the states of Sub-Saharan Africa.


Switzerland and Ghana sign an agreement on climate protection

Switzerland and Ghana today signed an agreement during a video conference in the Ghanaian capital Accra, which enables Switzerland to reduce its CO2 emissions partly abroad through climate protection projects in the African country.





Raw materials: Switzerland calls for greater transparency in international gold trade

On 24 September, Switzerland submitted a proposal to the World Customs Organization (WCO) regarding an amendment to the international customs duty classification for gold. The aim of the proposal is to improve transparency and traceability in the international gold trade. Switzerland will already implement the proposed amendment for gold imports into Switzerland from 1 January 2021.




Federal Council adopts report on Switzerland's implementation of international humanitarian law

On 12 August 2020, the Federal Council adopted a voluntary report on the implementation of international humanitarian law by Switzerland. Seventy-one years after the adoption on 12 August 1949 of the Geneva Conventions, Switzerland is one of the first states to do so. Respecting, strengthening and promoting international humanitarian law are written into Switzerland's DNA. Switzerland intends to set an example and encourage other states to take similar initiatives. This would foster dialogue among states in order to improve the protection of victims of conflicts worldwide.


Coronavirus: Large-scale events in Switzerland to be permitted from October under strict conditions and with a permit

At its meeting on 12 August, the Federal Council took the decision to re-allow events for more than 1000 people from 1 October. Strict protective measures will apply and the events will have to be authorised by the cantons, taking into account the local epidemiological situation and their contact tracing capacity. The Federal Council thereby intends to ensure that the epidemiological situation in Switzerland does not deteriorate. At the same time, this careful reopening step takes into account the needs of society and the economic interests of sports clubs and cultural venues.


Coronavirus: Federal Council adopts second extraordinary addendum to 2020 budget

During its meeting on 12 August 2020, the Federal Council adopted Addendum IIb to the budget for 2020 via special dispatch. It submitted 13 supplementary credits for around CHF 770 million, aimed at cushioning the further impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The bulk of the funds (476.4 mn) will be applied for as extraordinary payment requirements.  


Switzerland supports Ghanaian farmers against COVID-19

On 5 August 2020, Ambassador Philipp Stalder and the Country Director of GIZ Ghana Mme. Regina Barbosa, and under the Competitive Cashew Initiative (ComCashew), presented Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and other essential items to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to help fight and contain the spread of COVID-19. The items were received by the Minister of State for Agriculture Dr. Nurah Gyeile.
