Background |
The project will be carried out in the district of Tal Afar. More than 100’000 people have returned to this district since it was retaken from ISIL on 31 August 2017. Public services are extremely limited, key infrastructure has been neglected and damaged during the recent military operations. The water network within Tal Afar city has been severely damaged and the Water Treatment Plant is currently out of order. Conflict-affected children have had irregular or no access to education since ISIL took over Tal Afar district in 2014. The restauration of the public education system is a priority for the Directorate of Education which calls for rehabilitation work and minor repairs to be carried out in schools across the district. Local authorities currently lack the necessary resources to re-launch these key public services and there are currently very few humanitarian actors intending to address these needs within Tal Afar district. |
Objectives | To improve access to water, education and child protection services for conflict-affected people in Tal Afar district. |
Target groups | The intervention will provide assistance to conflict-affected people including returnees, IDPs, host communities, and the potential further returnee population. Support to the Directorates of Water and Education is also envisaged. Under the WASH component of the project, 29 neighbourhoods will benefit from access to the city water network while four operators will be trained. 3,000 children will benefit from hygiene promotion sessions. Under the child protection component of the project, 1350 girls, boys, women and men will benefit from psychosocial support services and case management. Under the education activities, more than 3,200 children are expected to re-enrol in three schools targeted by the rehabilitation work. |
