UNOPS, Livelihood & food Trust Fund
The fund is planned for 5 years (2009-2014) with the purpose to increase food security and income generation opportunities for 1 to 1,5 million beneficiaries, men and women. Outputs: (1) Provision of direct agricultural production support; (2) Provision of effective market and employment support mechanisms; (3) Provision of social protection measures for poor households; (4) Capacity Development of local partners; (5) Gender-disaggregated M&E evidence and studies will be used for pro-poor policy influencing; (6) Support rural livelihood through increased water availability (community rainwater catchment ponds and small plot irrigation technologies). Village ponds will be rehabilitated through cash-for-work (60% men and 40% women) allowing sufficient rainwater to be harvested each year. This water can be used to support livelihoods such as animal husbandry. Providing financing for the adoption of innovative irrigation technologies by vulnerable farmers will help revitalise farms, increase their productivity and boost their yields. With a more sustainable access to water sources the burden for women and children to collect and carry water for domestic and agricultural needs will be greatly reduced. With increased income and productivity in villages through these interventions, the rural economy will start being revitalised.
