The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal plays a crucial role as an independent national human rights institution (NHRI) in the protection and promotion of human rights of the people in Nepal. During the past ten years Nepal has ratified the main international human rights conventions and has achieved important progress in the protection of human rights. Nevertheless, human rights remain often not fully protected and promoted.
With the support provided by Denmark and Switzerland the aim is to increase the capacities, skills, and abilities of the commissioners and the staff of the NHRC and strengthen the NHRC as an institution. This will help the NHRC to fulfill its mandate, increase its independence, legitimacy and leverage to advocate more effectively for the protection and promotion of human rights in Nepal.
The bilateral Agreements to this effect were signed between H.E. Dr. Urs Herren, Ambassador, H.E. Kirsten Geelan, Ambassador and Mr. Renaud Meyer, Country Director, UNDP on 5th May 2016. In the same signing ceremony, the Project Document was signed between the NHRC and UNDP.
