Poverty Alleviation through Livestock Development in the Northern Uplands of Vietnam (PALD) Project

Despite Vietnam’s high economic growth rate in the last decades with impressive achievements in poverty reduction, the poverty rate gap between urban and rural areas is still high.

Contesto

More than 95% of poor people live in rural areas. In the north west region of Vietnam, especially in the four upland districts, which are selected to implement the PALD phase I and II in Northern provinces of Son La, Phu Tho and Yen Bai (Annex 2), where ethnic minority accounts for more than 60%, the poverty rates reaches 49% in 2009[1].

Obiettivi

To increase farmer's incomes by strengthening sustainable and replicable livestock services, production systems, and by providing remote households with better access to local and regional markets.

Gruppi target

Key target group will be over 10’200 household direct beneficiaries members of FIGs and about 65’000 household indirect beneficiaries in 64 communes of 4 districts.

Effetti a medio termine

Outcome 1: Farmers adopt skills and knowledge on pig and poultry production technologies and benefit from better access to livestock related services, which are consolidated through supporting local partners’ capacity building.

Outcome 2: Farmers’ incomes increase by strengthening house-based economic calculations and building and consolidating reliable market linkages.

Outcome 3: Experience is capitalized and shared between all related stakeholders in order to scale up at provincial and national levels.

Risultati

Risultati fasi precedenti:  

  • The average income from chicken and pig raising of 5,600 direct beneficiaries (98% women, 90% ethnic minority) has increased VND1’890’000/month[1] respectively, leading to a reduction of poverty rate from 41.2 % (in 2006) to 7.5% (in 2009). By the end of 2010, 43’500 households (50% of total population) indirectly benefited from project
  • Over 12 types of PALD’s technical documents were published, highly appreciated by governmental agencies and widely applied by other development partners[2].  
  • Initial results on market linkages: there have been at least 20 agencies committed to sell of products at local levels.
