Geneva Conventions at 75

Local news, 12.08.2024

The Geneva Conventions were signed in Geneva 75 years ago, on 12 August 1949.

The four Conventions are the cornerstone of international humanitarian law, and the universally accepted rules that prevail in all times, including in times of war.

The Geneva Conventions are our common humanity. They ensure that the basic rights of prisoners and wounded persons, civil and military, are respected, that families get reunited and get news from loved ones, that civilians are protected and fed by occupying powers, and that the Emblem of the Red Cross and Red Crescent is unviolable. Peace is easier to make when the Geneva Conventions are respected.
