To commemorate the 170th anniversary of the death of Donizetti, the Macao International Music Festival will kick off with the timeless Elixir of Love in a production by Zurich Opera House. The highly-praised German stage director, Grischa Asagaroff will join hands with tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz, pupil of Plácido Domingo, and acclaimed soprano Laura Giordano to enlighten us about the magical power of love amidst the magnificent music by this great Italian composer!

Starting with the question of production and later consumption, packaging and culture of food, design today plays a vital role when it comes to innovation in the food sector. Prof. Ilya Gringolts from the Department of Music at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), has been invited to perfom in Hong Kong on 22 September 2018. Youngest winner of the prestigious International Violin Competition Premio Paginini, internationally-acclaimed violinist Ilya Gringolts has been revered for his virtuosic playing and sensitive interpretations towards the classical music repertoire. Having performed with leading orchestras around the world that has included the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony and NHK Symphony, Gringolts will be making his Hong Kong début with Hong Kong Sinfonietta.

A team of experts from Switzerland, Cuba and India are researching the characteristics of a new type of cement called LC3 (limestone calcined clay cement) which has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions up to 30 percent compared to standard cementand producing it on a trial basis. The project is led by the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). An Information Day on the LC3 is going to be held on August 5 at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

If we keep our eyes and ears open and our minds alert, day-to-day we will be having a whole lot more fun. Dimitri de Perrot is a Swiss artist, musician, and theatre director. His primary interest lies in sound art, and his work often draws from his experience working with stage actors. His two sound-based installations, MYOUSIC and UNLESS, will open up new perspectives for the audience, allowing them to view the world in bold, new light. Dimitri has received the grant from The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia to produce and premiere UNLESS in China.

With the support from Pro Helvetia Shanghai, Swiss Arts Council, an in-situ outreach programme of three days designed by Sonic Amass, first takes the shape of a workshop and develops into a laboratory for sound improvisation during the following days. A team of sound artists and participants will record and collect various objects to be manipulated and transformed into a sound piece and installation in Chai Wan, an area known for its semi-industrial as well as residential character between sea and mountains. A sound metaphor for the plural identities of the daily life in the surroundings of WING—a patchwork of sounds, beings, thoughts and words will be created.

Geneva Camerata (GECA) will be presenting an uncustomary program compiled by their young and talented music director David Greilsammer, with winner of both the Sibelius and Tchaikovsky Competitions, Viktoria Mullova, a highly regarded violinist of exceptional versatility and musical integrity. The audience will hear her virtuosic technique as well as matchless interpretative subtlety on Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. This will surely be one of the most exciting concerts of the year, with more originality brought by Jonathan Keren’s composition based on Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and his orchestral arrangement of Debussy’s Fireworks.
