Emergency Food and Nutrition Assistance DPRK 2019
The Emergency Food and Nutrition Assistance DPRK 2019 Project responds to an urgent request of the DPR Korea to extend food assistance to its citizens in 2019, following a poor harvest after a nation-wide heat wave and regional floods in 2018. The assistance will be provided through the World Food Programme (WFP) and targets 50,000 children in the three highly affected provinces of the country, South Hwanghae, Ryanggang and Jaggang for a period of 12 months.

Contexte | The UN estimates that 41 percent of the population of the DPRK are chronically food insecure. According to official harvest figures, the State farms have registered last year a drop in the cereal harvest of 1.48million tons of grains. This is about half a million ton in excess of the 1million tons deficit recorded in ‘normal’ years. The biggest harvest losses were recorded in the traditional food surplus provinces of the “rice bowl” of the DPRK, in North and South Hwanghae, whereas chronic malnutrition continues to be highest in the Northern Provinces of Jaggang and Ryanggang. The outlook for the early harvest in June looks mix. At any rate, the early harvest accounts for not more than 8 percent of total food output. The UN has prominently included the food shortage into its annual appeal, however, a separate emergency appeal from WFP is currently under preparation and may be expected in late April or early May. |
